Q: Many people I know here boil their water before drinking it. Is that safe?

A: Shanghai water is considered potable BUT it does contain larger amounts of heavy metals than we usually would find acceptable. Thus if one boils the water, it only increases the concentration of the heavy metals as most of what boils off is the healthy part of the water. It also contains high amounts of particulate matter. That and some chemical runoff from fertilizers and pesticides and then there is the high levels of chlorine used to disinfect the water... So best to use filtered water, either through a household filter system that removes heavy metals, or through reputable bottled sources if a quality home filter is not an option.

A: Yes, one of the most commercially available processes that remove heavy metals from the water is reverse osmosis. Most quality purifiers use multiple stages in conjunction with a reverse osmosis stage to assure safer water.

A: No. While a Brita or activated carbon filter removes some contaminants and makes the water taste better, it does not fully remove some of the contaminants present in tap water in China.. Fertilizer and pesticide residues, industrial pollution, and heavy metals end up in the main waterways, which supply much of this country’s water sources. These pollutants are not removed completely by a mere carbon filter like a Brita. It is best to get a filter with Reverse Osmosis.

A: Shanghai Municipal water is generally pretty good in terms of being disinfected, as it leaves the plant, but as it travels through the old infrastructure, it picks up rust and other stuff in the pipes so by the time it gets to your home, many secondary sources of pollution and contamination have access to your water so it is best to drink properly filtered water. As for Bathing, the water is often highly chlorinated to keep it disinfected throughout the water system so for many, a chlorine filter will help make the water less “swimming pool-like” and softer do one does not get dry hair and skin.

A: Studied show that Shanghai tap water usually contains high levels of chlorine, a known carcinogen that is a necessary evil, as it is what keeps the water system disinfected. While it is used all over the world, the levels found in Shanghai’s older municipal water system sometimes are higher because many high rises have secondary reservoirs on the roof and so the management companies of those buildings also add chlorine to assure disinfection. And as the old adage goes, “If one bag is good…two bags must be better” so many times the workers over chlorinate “just in case”. Unfortunately, that leaves the tap water over chlorinated.

Our purifier is quite slim so it can usually fit inside any cabinet, even if you have a garbage disposal. The storage tank can be laid on its sideways to save space.
